THE 2ND PART
(Classes 4 - 6)
Welcome to the 2nd part, you survived the 1st section. During the 2nd section we will be delving further into the mysterious portfolio and completing our quick shot exercises. A couple of things you'll need to be prepared for:
- Working out of class times. Just completing your work within class is not going to give you enough time to produce quality work.
- Bringing in work that you have completed in other classes, in other schools, as personal projects.

THE GRID
Why do we use grids?
Firstly they make our life a lot easier. They are a tool and they assist us in getting a design onto the page quickly and easily. We don't have to agonize if we have used a good grid.
Think about it like this: If you had to do one page without a grid you could do it - it would require some thought about spacing, but you could do it. If you had to do 100 pages without a grid you would be absolutely worn out.
Secondly they create a visual flow for our readers. We can be sure that the spacing we have on page 1 is the same as the spacing we have on page 87. It gives a nice uniformity and there is no surprises allowing the reader to focus on what we want them to focus on - the content.
Using grids is basically good spatial management.

SETTING UP OUR PORTFOLIO GRID
First off lets set up our page. As we've already discussed we need about 10 pieces to create a good impression, plus an intro page, plus a CV. So that's 12 pages. Make sure there is only one column and lets get rid of the margins.
This is what you should see, a nice blank page.
Now we need to put the grid on. Make sure you are on the Master page so you can be sure it will repeat on every page.
Go up to layout and select Create Guides.
Set it up like this making sure there is no gutters. In the future you'll use gutters a lot but in this case we're not going to use them.
The baseline grid we will use (30x20)
Put the pictures on.
Make sure you are touching the guides with all sides. Type should work the same way
Command W to look at the preview of what it will look like. Notice that there is a nice feel of uniformity.
